May 05, 2021 05:34 PM

Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FAS) at DAV University, Jalandhar organized a webinar on the topic, “Scope and importance of Organic Farming in India” on 4th May, 2021. Dr. J. P. Saini, Prof and Head (Rtd.) Department of Organic Agriculture and Natural Farming, CSK HPKV, Palampur was the resource person.

The event started with the introduction of the topic to the participants by Dr. A. H. Reddy, Assistant Prof., FAS followed by recitation of Gaytri Mantra. Dean Academics (Officiating), DAV University, Dr. R.K.Seth formally welcomed the speaker and introduced the speaker to the audience. Dr. J. P. Saini explained in detail the scope and benefits of organic farming. He stressed on the need of organic farming in India and discussed the historical background of the organic agriculture, implications of use of chemicals in agriculture, principles of organic farming, components of organic farming, scientific evidences with respect to yield comparisons from national and international institutes, challenges in organic farming and way forward.  Dr. J. P. Saini emphasized that organic farming is very important for human health and soil health. Our natural resources (soil, air and water) are contaminated due to indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and residues of these harmful chemicals are present in the food crops which grow nowadays resulting into several health hazards including cancer, diabetes and weak immunity. He also discussed challenges in adopting organic farming like lack of awareness, poor research investments, lack of proper policy, financial assistance to poor farmers for opting organic farming etc. and suggested that Ministry of Agriculture should introduce favourable govt. policies and strategies for the promotion of organic agriculture. He also informed the participants that yield of different crops is almost at par (about 90%) to what we get in conventional agriculture but the quality and prices of organic produce are high. He stressed that there should be assistance to farmers who are willing to convert their land into organic farming, an increase in investment on research in organic agriculture and by strengthening links between the government, private sectors and NGOs.  After the presentation, the keynote speaker interacted with the students and addressed their queries.  At the end Coordinator, FAS, Dr. Anju Pathania delivered the vote of thanks. About 250 students and faculty members participated in the webinar.

Vice-Chancellor (Officiating), DAV University, Dr. Jasbir Rishi and Registrar (Officiating), DAV University; Dr. K. N. Kaul appreciated the effort of Faculty of Agricultural Sciences for organizing such knowledge enhancing webinar and motivated them to organize such webinars in future also.
