Experts highlight methods to stay positive in life
Jalandhar, February 27
Different psychologists held deliberations on the role of positive psychology in promoting and maintaining the mental health of society. The experts participating in a two-day “National Conference and Workshop on Psychological Disorders in Conflicting World” organized by DAV University said that positive psychological traits inculcate strength among individuals to stand up against adverse circumstances.
The workshop being organized by the Department of Psychology and Department of Education at the University was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp. The chief guest of the workshop was Dr Adarsh Kohli, Professor, Psychology, PGIMER, Chandigarh.

Welcoming the delegates, Dean Students Welfare and Head, Department of Psychology, Dr Jasbir Rishi focused on the post-traumatic growth over traumatic disorders by using positive psychology in life.
Head, Mental Health Division, Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR), Dr Updesh Kumar talked about well-being and social support in the Armed forces. Dr Updesh, who was the keynote speaker, said that suicides by the armed personnel were a negative effect of stress. Motivation to realize the abilities of the individuals helps them combat stress. “Feeling good” and “functioning well” could help overcome any obstacle in life, Dr Updesh said.
Dr Davinder Singh from the Department of Psychology, Guru Nanak Dev University, in his presentation “Seven Things about You” said that one should not see life with the eyes of others to stay happy. He said that one should never compete with others and aim at exhibiting pro-social behavior.

Internationally certified Psychotherapist Dr Shreya Pahwa said that various personal and psychological problems including anxiety, depression, family conflict, trauma and panic attacks have been adversely affecting people across different age groups. Dr Shreya who is trained from Albert Ellis Institute, New York highlighted how to deal with disagreements and opinions of others. She also suggested to start preventive, emotional educational programmes to help children at the school level.

Applauding the Department of Psychology and Department of Education for organizing the conference, Prof Desh Bandhu Gupta, Vice-Chancellor, DAV University said that the aim of academic professionals should be making people achieve happiness. Dr Sushma Arya, Registrar of the University and faculty members were also present on the occasion.
