Noted expert Prof R C Sobti insisted on making education beneficial for society

Jalandhar, December 9

Eminent educationist Prof RC Sobti emphasized on increasing the quality of education and making education profitable for the society. Dr. Sobti, who was awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution to education was speaking at the Faculty Development Program conducted by DAV University on the importance of assessment and accreditation in higher education. The program was organized by the University's Internal Quality Assessment Cell.

Dr. Sobti said that there were more than 900 universities and over 45000 colleges in the country. In such a scenario, it was important to maintain the quality of education. He said that getting the accreditation done by NAAC positively impacts the quality rating of the institution and in addition to enhancing its respect among the masses. He said that institutions should focus on digitization and focus on faculty development. The Universities should promote skill-based courses and focus on society oriented research. He said that education should also be supported by industry.

He said that now educational institutions were focusing on intellectual property. Dr. Sobti has been Vice Chancellor of Punjab University Chandigarh and Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University Lucknow.

Dr. Sobti and two other experts at the workshop, Dr. Pratosh Bansal of Devi Ahilya University and Prof. Shafiq Ahmed Ansari from Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi, were welcomed by Vice Chancellor Dr. Desh Bandhu Gupta, Executive Director Mr. Rajan Gupta, Registrar Dr. Sushma Arya and Dean Students Welfare Dr. Jasbir Rishi.

Dr. Desh Bandhu Gupta said that Prof. Sobti and other experts would guide the University for NAAC assessment through the workshop.

NAAC expert and Professor at Devi Ahilya University Dr. Pratosh Bansal said that institutions should make a habit of maintaining quality. Highlighting the methods of getting NAAC accreditation, he said that its entire process is transparent and quality-centric. Dr. Bansal said that educational institutions should focus on improving their curriculum. The outcome of studies should be people-centric.

Prof. Shafeeque Ahmed Ansari from Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi said that internal quality assessment had an important role in enhancing quality. Universities should also keep a record of the work done by them in a systematic manner. He also talked about best practices in education. According to Dr. Ansari, now institutes also needed to work for energy efficiency and environment.

Thanking guests, Mr. Rajan Gupta, Executive Director and former DGP of the University said that the standard of education should be international. He said that service to the society should be an integral part of the degree, just like abroad. Mr. Gupta also spoke on skill development.
