DAVU organises seminar on drug de-addiction

May 22, 2017 04:33 PM

The Department of Psychology in association with NSS Unit organised an interaction on drug deaddiction on Wednesday. It was a unique initiative as rather than organising a seminar or lecture, this interaction was with youngsters (came from drug deaddiction centre) who have given up drug addiction. The youngsters are taking treatment at Bolster Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, Jalandhar.

While sharing their fight with drug addiction, youngsters underlined that only motivation for a person for leaving this addiction should come from one’s heart which is higher than any other kind of motivation.  They shared that seeing that their families getting ruined because of them motivated them to come out of this addiction. They advised the students not to give into peer pressure and not to taste any kind of drug ever.

DCP Gurmeet Singh and ACP Deepika Sharma also came to join the interaction. DCP Gurmeet Singh appreciated the efforts of the University and bravery of youngsters. While highlighting the efforts of the police force to check drug addiction, he said that supply and demand are always related. He said that the police force is trying its best to control the supply but the society should work at the same time to control the demand.

Vice Chancellor Dr A K Paul and Registrar Dr Rekha Kalia Bhardwaj were also present in the interaction. Dr Paul said that as a responsible citizens of the country, we all should come forward and help to check this problem of drug addiction while Dr Bhardwaj said that this problem need to be discussed and solved as it does not only affect individuals but families and society as whole.

Dean Students Welfare Dr Jasbir Rishi, who is working since long for the causeof drug deaddiction said that seeing the youngsters coming out of the problem of drug addiction is a very satisfying experience as they have started living their lives again.

It came out from the seminar that there is a dearth of Psychologists in Punjab who can help in tackling this problem of drug addiction. Keeping this into consideration, DAV University from this session is starting MA Psychology in its campus. The students in the department of Psychology would be specially trained to tackle social problems and contribute to the society.
